This designer’s rocky start
My work in design started with a project for my undergraduate capstone course. I agreed to be the design manager for my team, not realizing that I was now responsible for building out pages for our 60+ page research book.
After many long hours fiddling around in Adobe InDesign and pulling a few all-nighters, I discovered that I really loved creating visual ways to present information.
But it got better from there
After the initial shock of teaching myself an entire design tool using YouTube, Google, and my own wit, I started diving into design for fun. I created designs for my friends and for myself — like this drawing of UT Austin’s beloved mascot, Bevo.
I then learned the importance of branding by teaching design classes
When I finally built enough confidence in my work, I opted to teach graphic design and branding with Lavner STEM Camps the summer before I started graduate school.
There, I taught online classes to 6-14 year-old students. I taught design concepts like how to use color, lines, space, fonts, and shapes to create beautiful digital designs that they would eventually print on shoes, sweatshirts, and t-shirts. I also taught students how to establish a mission statement and create designs that suit their brands.
And since regular graphic design tools weren’t enough of a challenge…
I learned to code for digital art. In this Creative Coding course I took at Penn State, I learned how to merge my coding expertise with my love of design to create beautiful geometric patterns and my own drawing tools like in the video.
I also created immersive experiences using Unity and Vuforia at labs like the ChoroPhronesis Lab and The Dreamery.
And, I learned to create animations using my graphic designs.
But mostly, I design for fun
Shown to the right is one of my most recent designs for a t-shirt for the Penn State Central Texas Chapter Alumni Association. I plan to continue creating designs for this group and the upcoming events.
